Background: Chronic rhinitis is a global public health concern affecting sleep, cognitive function, mood, quality of life, and work performance. It contributes to socioeconomic costs through decreased productivity, including absenteeism and presenteeism. This study explores the impact of chronic rhinitis on work productivity and employee performance to inform better management strategies.
Method: A literature review and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 chronic rhinitis patients from Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz and Hospital Ampang. Data saturation was reached, and thematic analysis was performed using Atlas.ti.
Result: Eight themes were identified: absence during working hours, work limitations, disruption of social interactions, reduced work efficiency, emotional disturbances, weaknesses in compliance with work procedures, sleepiness at work, and negative perceptions from colleagues.
Conclusion: Chronic rhinitis significantly affects work productivity, leading to absenteeism, reduced efficiency, and workplace stigma. These findings highlight the need for targeted management strategies to improve work performance and reduce the negative impact of chronic rhinitis on affected individuals.
